FOR SALE- Upton's Star Atlas (1896)

Published in New York by Ginn and Company in 1896, Upton's Star Atlas was written by Winslow Upton, AM, Professor of Astronomy at Brown University in Rhode Island and intended as a text for students and teachers of astronomy.  the full title of the book is: Star Atlas, Stars Visable to the Naked Eye and Clusters, Nebulae and Double Stars, Visable in Small Telescopes,Together with Variable Stars, Red Stars, Characteristic Star Groups, Acient Constellations Figures and an Explanatory text

- The atlas which measures 14 x 17 inches when closed contains 29 pages of introductory descriptive material and progressively covers the following sections:
  • Constellations
  • Star Clusters and Nebulae 
  • Variable Stars
  • Star Colors
  • Double Stars
  • How to use the atlas
Each of the above sections is accompanied by an extensive list of naked objects on the charts listed by their NGC number. The New General Catalouge of Nebulae and Clusters of Stars (NGC) had been issued in 1888 and contained 7,840 celestial objects.

  • Six small format charts on two pages showing the constellation figures
  • Two large  circumpolar charts covering  each of which covers  40 to 90 degrees of declination.
  • Four large charts, each of which covers six hours of right ascension between -40 degrees and +40 degrees
  • The four large charts measure 14 x 17 inches (two full pages each) and are printed on glossy paper

Condition- Some staining/discoloring on outside cover, yellowing on pages, minor binding issues. All star charts in excellent shape, solidly attached with original binding. The overall condition is consistent with a book which is 124 years old.
