One of the first books of astronomical paintings was "The Grand Tour: A Traveler's Guide to the Solar System" by Ron Miller and William Hartmann, 1981. I bought the painting that appears on page 59 and the back cover titled "Dust Storm on Mars" and enjoyed it for almost 40 years, but now it's time for a new owner to enjoy it. The painting's caption reads "Like an avalanche, a mountainous wall of yellow dust -- hundreds of meters high -- bears down upon a typically Martian landscape (right). Distant eroded hills show the effects of endless dust and wind. Once the storm reaches us, we could remain blanketed within a dull, ochre pass -- through which the sun barely glows -- for weeks, while winds shriek around us." Ron later added astronauts and a descending spacecraft "to give the painting a little more focus and timeliness". The painting is 19.5 by 13.5 inches, professionally framed and matted, and is in mint condition. It's nicely detailed and an excellent published example classic space art by one of the most accomplished and famous space artists.

Available April 2020.
