Looking at upgrading from my Pronto, I've seen an older Televue Genesis 500mm Flourite for sale. Which would be a better choice, the Genesis or a used Televue 85.

As far as I recall the Genesis was a 100 mm scope. That said if the Genesis is in fine shape I would rather have it than a 85. I suppose calling it a 500 mm F/5 is just a tricky way of saying it is a 100 mm though LOL

The Genesis has a fl:500mm(focal length).

Fluorite refractors are special and they keep their value. The extra aperture also makes it the one I would prefer.
Good luck in your choice, whichever it is you pick.

Hi,  I have both the TV-85 and the Genesis SDF scopes.  They are both great scopes for wide field viewing.  I definitely feel the Genesis is slightly sharper and has better contrast on planets when used at high power, however, these scopes are not really meant for high power viewing.  For wide field, they are both great for scanning the milky way.  The Genesis is also brighter for dim objects like globular clusters due to the larger aperture.  The TV-85 is much lighter and shorter so its easier to travel with and mount. Good luck with your decision.
