I don’t spend a lot of time star-gazing. I was out tonight.

I was just wondering if there’s a supernova in M51 these days. I was looking at M51 tonight and saw a very bright star in the NW corner of the galaxy that I had not noticed before.

I did a sketch of M51 last year, which I still have, and I’m pretty the bright star--the one I’m referring to--was not there when I did the sketch.

I realized my mistake.

When I did my sketch last year, I was using a 10” dob. Now I have a 17.5” dob and, of course, what used to be very dim stars in the field of view are much brighter.
