M51 Supernova

I spent about 3.5 hours out tonight observing. I started with M51. The new supernova is quite easy to see if you use high enough magnification. At 400x I could easily hold it with direct vision. A good finder chart or photo is needed to positively ID it.

NGCs 2005, ICs 103, Other 70, Palomar GCs 6, Abell PNs 12, Herschel 400: 316.

I was able to see the SN last nite in my C11 under mag 5.5 skies, although they are bit better towards the north where this was.

Thanks again Andreas for your picture--exactly what I needed to make the ID with confidence. Saw the SN in the late twilight before the clouds rolled in, with my 16-inch. Quite easy at 280X.
