Hi all,
The MESSENGER team has just released the first image from the first Mercury flyby. Fantastic to finally see some regions of the planet that have never been seen in detail before!

More images will be coming over the next few days. There have been delays because of a problem with the Ulysses spacecraft that has required the use of the 70m DSN dishes.
You can see what is unseen territory by comparing the simulated view here: http://space.jpl.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/wspace?tbody=199&vbody=-236&month=1&day=14&year=2008&hour=20&minute=17&fovmul=1&rfov=20&bfov=30
with the actual view. The blanked out areas in the simulated view show the regions not seen by Mariner 10.
Cheers,
Maurice
