A Seldom Seen Economic Indicator

A new Walmart is opening in DeKalb County, GA, an Atlanta suburb. According to the AJC, in two days with no advertising or signs, they got 7500 applicants for the 350 to 400 jobs available. Typically, Walmarts draw 1000 applicants per day when they open new stores. Local economists say that the area has low unemployment but this indicates how many people in the area had previously quit looking or want to upgrade to a job at Walmart.

In another AJC story, in 2009, Kia is opening a plant in West Georgia. In 4 weeks, over 11,000 people have signed up for alerts about the 2,500 positions that will be filled.

These stories are something to remember if someone says unemployment is low, or that we need to import more Mexicans for blue collar work, or that Americans don't want to work.
