What if the best rifle he could by was a rifle like my uncle's old hunting rifle where you pulled back a bolt, stuck a single bullet in, shoved the bolt forward then pulled the trigger......4 or 5 seconds between shots at least......maybe someone could have tackled him after the first or second shot, brained him with a chair or whatever...less carnage.... (my uncle was a good hunter with that - he got his deer every year....)

I do not wish to get into labelling guns as assault weapons or military style or whatever some folks call them - the debate devolves into a 'tastes great, less filling' labelling argument instead of hitting the main point.  It's high rates of fire and huge clips/magazines holding 20-30 or more rounds that are one of the main  problems no matter what you call the guns...Rifles that can get off a round a second need banning 100%.  Clips holding more than 3 bullets need 100% banning. Or no clips at all for rifles...  Make licensing for firearms at least as difficult and time consuming as licensing for an amateur radio license....make meaningful background checks and long waiting periods part of the process... (the Dayton perp  had a history in high school of making lists of people he wanted to kill and girls he wanted to assault...this should be part of his permanent record - should have been no guns for this guy, there was a police record of these offences....here - https://news.yahoo.com/classmate-says-dayton-shooter-targeted-180053657.html;_ylt=AwrCxnWod0hdY0YA.AIXFwx.;_ylu=X3oDMTByMjB0aG5zBGNvbG8DYmYxBHBvcwMxBHZ0aWQDBHNlYwNzYw--   )

But he got a high-rate-of-fire rifle, big clips and ammo because IF he had a background check at all, it was not nearly thorough enough...

Dave
Dave,

Americans will think you are not a reasonable man if they hear you say our old western six gun also has a rate of fire that is too fast for you. How quickly should somebody be able to fire a second round? Ten seconds?
Outlawing 20-30 round magazines does not help your side as much as you feel it will. Small magazines with 10 rounds can be loaded into the gun in two seconds. A six gun can be reloaded in one movement faster than you would think using a small piece of thin metal called a speed loader.

California has taken the lead once again. Forget the magazines, we're removing the bullets to put in them!

Ah yes, removing the nastiness and cleansing the thoughts, one round at a time...

Rod so I guess ABC says Ca. is not allowing people to reload if they can not buy bullets, does that include smokeless powder as well?  Just in case you don't get the drift!!   Calling  loaded rounds of ammunition  "bullets" is stupid!!!  Bullets are in loaded rounds > ammo

The new bullet law is working. 100 felons couldn't buy their ammo. I'd like to see them go out out of state, perhaps to Colorado or Georgia, to buy their ammo. Then, if we're lucky, Rich or Greg can deal with 'em. In the meantime, everytime you buy ammo in California you have to pay an additional dollar to go thru the background check:

If a background check doesn't stop the gun purchase why would it stop an ammo purchase?

Because the ammo purchase is more likely to be an ongoing process over a longer period of time. So someone buys a gun last year, commits a crime, has a record and tries to buy ammo this year and is denied. Off to Colorado or Georgia they go to have a potential face-off with you know who...

And your statements are completely illogical.  Why would they be off to Colorado?  Why Georgia?

They can go right next door and buy all the ammo they want.
Because I want them in your states(s), not next door. I want YOU to deal with 'em!
Now for the benefits of the new ammo law, in addition to what I've previously described Californian's get:
1 A dollar charge per purchase every time ammo is bought at a licensed gun store. If you buy ten bullets or only one, it's till a buck. For your the best bang for your buck, you get:
a. Immediate access to a statewide database, cross checked and verified for criminal behavior and arrest records of any potential purchaser.
b. Banned from sales of ammo if you don't muster-up.
c Free Wi Fi!
d. An armed escort out of the gun store
e Directions to either Colorado or Georgia
