In 1995, El Al stopped using their goverment division and hired a private company. Profiling is sitting down and talking to a passenger. This has proven 100% effective, because they are trained investigators,and can spot a phony. For those marginal passengers, they talk and pat down and/or use a electronic wand or a walk through screener. Get over this Politically Correct stuff..Grow up !

FWIW, was talking to a Pakistani friend at lunch. He gets "extra security" every time, so it doesn't seem too "random" to him. It's not that he likes it or anything, but he says he doesn't feel any "less frisked" because he knows that some innocent old ladies get frisked, too.

Remember Ted Kazinski and Timothy McVeigh. Our stereotype calls for mideast origin, certain surnames, but we have regularly seen very determined and deadly terrorists who do not match that mold.

And there are a lot of pleasant sounding fairy tales about Israeli security. I lived there for 2 years and know why it isn't being adopted, here:

Lots of people standing around with submachineguns and capricious use of strip searches of anyone they feel like. And the largest factor is they have no traffic to screen compared to US transport. The entire nation has a million fewer people than New Jersey. Israel has no experience whatsoever with passenger throughput requirements of even 1% of the US air traffic volume.

If we feel that is necessary to fly, it's time to end commercial aviation.

As one of those pinko commie liberals, I too find TSA's current practices absurd, offensive, and a diminution in what passes for freedom in this benighted country. A small reminder: TSA was established as a new and burgeoning Federal bureaucracy by Bush, in response to the fearful bleating of the very well terrorized American people. What's the matter, did Fox News tell you to blame all this on liberals too?
