Florida Crocodiles

The American Crocodile is alive and doing pretty well in the southern Everglades. When I lived in south Florida in the 70's, I searched the park for these critters and never saw one. Now, I can pretty much find one every time I look. They have made a great comeback, partly thanks to the Turkey Point nuclear power plant, whose warm cooling water effluent keeps the crocs toasty. I was in an inflatable kayak when I took these photos, testament to my confidence in our crocs being non-aggressive.

Crocs making a comeback in Florida by being warmed by water from a nuclear reactor? Haven't we already seen that movie?

No, those aren't a series of double stars, those are alligator eyes reflecting my strobe at night. The single eyes (with their reflection below) are gators turned to the side, the double eyes are gators coming at you.
This was taken at Anhinga Trail in Everglades NP. Anybody for a moonlight swim?

Absolutely excellent photography, John. I lived in the panhandle for many years and alligators were quite common. As an aquatic biologist we were always in their vicinity, and likely wading near them much of the time collecting biological samples. About this time of year one could hear their mating calls; unnerving at times.
