Ed: I have been a ham since 1968, and have only been into amateur astronomy for a little under two years. Don't get discouraged by the behavior on the repeaters! A lot of those people are just enhanced CB'ers. There is so much to do on the HF bands, on the VHF/UHF bands (I am very much into satellite operation), with digital technology (you should try PSK 31 - I have worked islands thousands of miles away in the Pacific using only 50 watts and have had beautiful copy), with transmitter hunting, etc. I have an HT, but only use it when I am communicating with friends on Field Day or something like that. Otherwise, I never get on the repeaters because of the behavior you describe. There is another whole world out there waiting for you on all of ham radio's many other venues.

Clear skies and 73 (first time I've ever combined those two),
