Venus Sept. 2, 2007

Posted By Miguel Olivares

It's been a while since I observed Venus, but I've been following the threads by fellow imagers on Astromart. Inspired, I waited for the planet to rise above the tree line on Saturday morning. It was almost 7 am, the planet still easily visible to the naked eye.

At an altitude of 23 degrees, I quickly spotted it through my 80mm refractor. I lost myself in the eyepiece for a moment, looking at this marvel. The tiny sliver was shimmering against the blue background in an almost hypnotic dance.

Seeing wasn't good, but that did not matter. I trained my C-11 on the planet, and captured a 50 second video at 10 fps. The planet nearly filled the frame of the webcam, here is the result.

Average seeing.

Toucam 740k
No filters.

Registax:
Trying to work on the color, I used the LRGB mixer in registax to save 3 versions of the image, to emphasize each channel. I then combined those channels in Photoshop to get better color rendition, and detail, at least on my monitor. Suggestions are welcome.

Thanks.

Comet 17P / Holmes

I wasn't expecting to image the comet tonight. Fortunately, the sky cleared long enough to capture a few shots.

KOYAANISQATSI

Posted By Miguel Olivares

The film consists primarily of slow motion and time-lapse photography of cities and natural landscapes across the United States. The visual tone poem contains neither dialogue nor a vocalized narration: its tone is set by the juxtaposition of images and music.

In the Hopi language, the word Koyaanisqatsi means 'life of moral corruption and turmoil, life out of balance', and the film implies that modern humanity is living in such a way.
