Last Night's Observation of M34 - Open Cluster Que

Posted By john raymond

I was observing M34 a few nights ago in my 18". I recognize the arrangement of the bright central stars you refer to.
My understanding is limited on this subject so please forgive any errors.
Of the few open clusters I've observed, they all have different shapes, arrangements, and brightness. While in Perseus, look at the sprawling Alpha Persiei Cluster, the elongated NGC 1425, and the small dusty IC 348. Even the great Double Cluster, so spacious and magnificent, shows no symmetry of the brighter stars.
The clouds from which these clusters are born are irregular. The other stars and clusters in the Milky Way pull and tug on clusters. It's like traffic, some move faster, some slower. I doubt any cluster can remain spherical under these circumstances.
I suggest taking a look at the open cluster discussion in Uranometria, Burnhams, Night Sky Observers Guide, or best, "Star Clusters" by Archinal and Hynes
Where is the cluster out Sun was born of? Or was it born in a cluster at all?

G11 on Meade Standard Field tripod?

Posted By john raymond

I "think" Losmandy offers a short-legs set for your application. The Meade tripod is sturdy, but for imaging maybe the Giant Meade tripod is better.

Or look at an Astro-Physics pier:

If You Could Buy Only One TeleVue Eyepiece...

Really depends on scope focal length and ratio. 2mm exit pupil is good.
The Delos really impressed me.

Idea for a Gibraltar 5

Posted By john raymond

Ho usato per avere un Gibilterra-5. Bella treppiede, ma difficile trovare un equilibrio. Io uso un Discmounts DM-4 adesso. eccellente treppiede. Forse il DM-6 รจ meglio per il vostro telescopio. Buona fortuna

The FS 152 is a fine scope, but whay are you buying one from Spain? They haven't been made for a few years now. Sounds suspicious.

Calculating exit pupil with a binovue

Posted By john raymond

That sounds right to me.
Try measuring the exit pupils with a transparent ruler. Differences will be obvious.

Another exercise: hold up your favorite eyepiece and note the exit pupil. Attach a Barlow and see how smaller the exit pupil is.
