To Execute or Not

Posted By Steve Stonehill

Why can't we use the healthy, disease free, ones as living organ banks? Even though it has no humanity a child rapist's organs are human and could potentially save an innocent human being's life. Just leave enough to keep it alive. The diseased ones could be used for non-lethal medical research. I resent giving non-humans such as rapists and murderers any human rights but I understand the point of view of not executing them. In war we kill honorable enemy soldiers and civilians that are doing their duty to God and country as they see it but we are squeamish about exterminating predatory creatures that prey upon our nation's very future, our children.

Eon 120 interferometer results

Posted By Steve Stonehill

Hi All,

This is great but not surprising news. The Chinese have come a long way with optics. I recently bought the same SW120ED that Jim has and I'm having the same experience that he is. This scope has extremely well figured optics and star tests unbelievably well. I've been fortunate to own a few premium scopes, refractors, newts, and cats, and this Synta made scope holds its own against them all.

c8 vs 8" dob

Posted By Steve Stonehill

Hi Vic,

I had an excellent 9.25 SCT and I now have an 8" f7 Newt on a Dob base that I vastly prefer to the SCT. With properly installed cooling fans and a 3 vane spider this Newt is a true pleasure to use. Planetary viewing with binoviewers with this scope is unbelievable.

Skywatcher 120ED/Orion 120ED Same Scope?

Posted By Steve Stonehill

Hi Rod,

I researched these two scopes before I purchased the Skywatcher with the same question in mind. I was told by more than one person in and out of the industry that these scopes share the same optics but the EON has slightly better appointments such as a retractable dewshield and a different focuser. I thought that the Skywatcher was a better bargain and I'm extremely pleased with it. Hope this helped.

Merry Christmas,

Steve

Cottonmouth

Posted By Steve Stonehill

Beautiful photos John! The Florida Cottonmouth is certainly a more attractive reptile than the Eastern subspecies. That was very nice of you to move it out of the road. Over the years I've moved everything from massive Common Snapping turtles and large Northern Pinesnakes to a tiny Arizona Coral snake off of various roads and trails. Keep up the good work!

What Are Your Favorite Military Surplus Rifles?

Posted By Steve Stonehill

I've never owned one but a friend had an HK91 that was a real pleasure to shoot. I had an AR15 at the time but I preferred his HK. The .308 Win is a great cartridge for handloaders and a bit more satisfying to shoot than the .223. I would like to try an auto G3 someday!

Quickset tripods?

Posted By Steve Stonehill

Hi Dennis,

I have a Samson with a Wimberley head on it. Not only is it light in weight but it's also incredibly sturdy. I've actually mounted a 5" f9.4 achromat on it for astronomy and photography with excellent results. This a 102mm f6.5 on the Samson.

Robber Fly

Posted By Steve Stonehill

"The small translucent bulb that you see below the wing is a haltere, which acts as a counter balance to the wings, and is itself a vestigial wing."

Thanks John! I was unsure of what that structure was. I recently bought a new camera and I've been experimenting with macro and trying to learn as much as I can about the insects that I shoot.

Steve

Frogs and toads really are neat little critters! My wife and I always feel better when we hear the first Spring Peepers of the season.
