Testing for Next Year

Posted By dan kowall

The cloudy weather found me rooting around in my 'Test Images' folder.
Since this has passed out of my observable sky, I'll have to wait until next year to do this one, but I thought the test image was pretty enough to post, albeit noisy, not very deep, and not well framed.
I don't have any image details at hand, other than this is using the Hubble palette.

That is one fine looking setup, David.
Let us know how it works.

SN2007af

Posted By dan kowall

I apologize for the poor quality of this image.
It was acquired during a bright moon through high, thin clouds and shows the effects of gusty winds.
The forecast calls for rainy weather for the next week, so I guess that's all the data that I'll be able to gather on this one.
It is, however, my first image of a supernova and one can't be so choosy when gathering data for these.
Image details, a larger image, and information are here:

The Whirlpool

It's an icon and it's a favorite of many.
What's not to love with those bold, asymmetric spiral arms seen face on?
Each year I take another hack at this one. Here's this years version:

You Can Feel My Pain...

Posted By dan kowall

The other night featured clear skies and no moon, something not experienced in recent memory.
That was the good news.
The bad news was that it was a mite windy:

NGC 6555

Posted By dan kowall

Here's one that you don't see every day. In fact, I was only able to find a couple of grainy black and white images of this galaxy during my research.
It's located about 20 degrees due south of Vega in the constellation Hercules.
A larger image, imaging details, and information about this galaxy can be found here:

NGC 6820/23 in Ha

Posted By dan kowall

This one was faint!
I could barely make it out in the subexposures, even though they were 30 minutes long, thus the long total exposure time.
Now I know why there aren't many images of this area.
Larger images and acquisition information are here:

NGC 6720 in Narrowband

Posted By dan kowall

You all know this iconic nebula by its Messier Number and its common nickname.
It looks a bit different in narrowband with the CFHT palette, though. It's rather like a rose.
A large image and information can be found here:

Interrupted Images

Posted By dan kowall

Here are a couple of images from earlier this year. Bad weather curtailed gathering all of the data that I would have liked to have gotten for these two.

IC 983 et al:
It's like seeing a beautiful woman walking toward you; you want to say something to her before she passes you by, yet all I could manage was a simple "hello" to this passing beauty. I really wanted to do justice to her portrait; she is rarely imaged, yet she possesses a wonderfully unique shape.
The low surface brightness of IC 983, coupled with the presence of a bright star (88 Bootes), and my extremely thin color data made processing this one an interesting exercise.

NGC 6914 Widefield:
Tom Davis posted a wonderful color image of this reflection/emission nebula not too long ago. The fates only allowed me enough time for a luminance of this area. Perhaps I'll be allowed enough time to gather color data next year.
