I now have my bearings (fixed)

Posted By Jim Moscheck

I finally had a chance to sand my teflon bearings and to clean the ebony star, but didn't try the Lemon Pledge, yet. I put the scope together in my garage and the motions are 100% better than before. I try it "clean" first and if needed I'll try the Pledge. As usual everyone, thanks for the advice. smile

Weather balloon

Posted By Jim Moscheck

I just had the coolest experience. I'm in my light polluted backyard, it's clear on a Friday night, and I have to work in the morning. :S

I set up my dob and see a bright light at the zenith. It's another weather ballon like I saw last week. I slew the big dob and wow there it is. I called to my wife and her friend to take a look while I grabbed my camera. Snapped off a few and while recentering it in my 17T4 it burst! Wow, I've never seen anything like that. I snapped a pic, see next post.

Someone got a great deal on a great EP today. How come this never happens to me when I'm looking at the ads? :S

Don't think I've seen one go for this low lately.

2X Powermate

Posted By Jim Moscheck

I haven't used a barlow in a while and was thinking about trying a 2" 2X powermate, but have a few questions.

My main scope is a 14.5" 4.3 dob and a paracorr is always in the focuser. Would the powermate be used with or without the paracorr? I don't have balance issues with this dob and have to use small weights on the UTA when changing to a lighter EP, so the UTA could take the extra weight with no problem.

Will it be too much glass in the optical path?

I currently have 12 and 17 T4s and a 26T5, but would probably only use the powermate with the T4 EPs.

Anyone using these combinations out there?

Thanks,

Another ? for Floyd

Posted By Jim Moscheck

Hi Floyd,
I saw your picture at Mt. Pinos and noticed the aperture stop on your dob. Do you use this much and does it help on poor seeing nights? Not that you get as many nights of mediocre seeing in California like we get here in the Michigan. wink :S

A hole lot of nothing

Posted By Jim Moscheck

Scientists today announce that there is a huge "hole" in the universe, a vast area of nothingness 1000x times larger than any they expected.

Retired NASA astronomer Steve Maran said of the discovery: "This is incredibly important for something where there is nothing to it."

David Gilmour: Remember That Night - Live from the

Posted By Jim Moscheck

WOW! I was mildly impressed with the release of Pulse last year, but complained it wasn't "really" Pink Floyd and was more like a Dave Gilmour and friends. Well I picked up the "real" David Gilmour and friends DVD Live at RAH and watched disk one last night. OK, he IS the best rock guitarist alive period.

Many PF hits including a few obscure ones and his whole recent solo album "On an Island" which feature David Crosby and Graham Nash singing harmony. Richard Wright from Pink Floyd is on keyboards. Finishes up with "Find the Cost of Freedom" from CSNY and "Arnold Lane" and "Comfortably Numb" both with David Bowie singing the Roger Waters parts. That was only disk one, I'm looking forward to disk two which has one of my favorite old PF tunes "Wot's the Deal". Lot's of music for the money, disk one was 150 minutes long.

Maybe someday before they get too old Pink Floyd will finally have a real reunion, but until then this DVD will keep the fans happy. Five stars!!!

Those confounded lights

Posted By Jim Moscheck

Hello all,

I guess this is the best forum to post this question.

I recently upgraded my scope hauler to an '07 Chrysler mini van. I like everything about the vehicle except for the flashing lights that come on when the side doors are opened. As long as I don't use the power lift for the back and open it manually it doesn't flash or beep, so I can get away with just not opening the side doors, but it sure isn't as convenient. But even if you open the side doors manually the warning lights flash. Does anyone know if the warning lights can be programed to not flash?

It really has one great feature in that you can turn off all the interior lights and dim the gauges with the twist of a dial. And the stow and go seats are awesome. This will enable me to have plenty of room when attending star parties and I can sleep in the car if conditions get really bad.

Here's hoping 2008 is clearer and darker than 2007 was, especially for us here around the Great Lakes. grin
