Gabby, Agent of Natural Selection

Posted By Deb Harper

Gabby, the Wonder Dog, came from the pound in September Y2K. She was very anxious the first three months that we would send her back to the gulag. Now a happy, calm, quiet creature, she considers it her duty to keep our back yard free of dangerous critters like squirrels and rabbits. She is my constant companion. I, like many others here, highly recommend getting an adult dog from the pound. Although those Rottie puppies look awful tempting. . .

The kindness of strangers

Posted By Deb Harper

There are many trails on a big bluff near my home. Bordering the trails are occasional natural stone basins. Some kind person has put out these jugs. I have never found one empty, even on the hottest of summer days.

Dog in rehab

Posted By Deb Harper

OK, OK. I've gone overboard here. My old (free from the pound) dog has arthritis and my vet sent me to a pain management vet (who knew?). Now Gabby is getting hydrotherapy, walking on a treadmill.

RIP Gabby

Posted By Deb Harper

A poem by Kate Barnes:

Why do you ask?

I can't make
any story
about my life

tonight. The house
is like an overturned
wastebasket;

the radio
is predicting
more rain.

I ask my dog
to tell me
a story, and she

never hesitates.
"Once upon
a time," she says,

"a woman lived
with a simply
wonderful dog..." and

she stops talking.
"Is that all?"
I ask her.

"Yes," she says,
"Why do you ask?
Isn't it enough?"

You know you want one

Okay, the velcro stuff at the end of the video is lame, but the first half is fantastic. I'm converting our garage. . .

Welcome Boomer

Posted By Deb Harper

Boomer is a 3 y/o German Shepherd rescue. Very nice manners in the house, but he pulls on the leash. A problem since he's almost as big as I am. However, the Halti/gentle leader had him walking like a jewel. He finds a special leaf, picks it up, carries it for a couple of blocks, carefully drops it and soon selects another special leaf.
