Age and gender

Posted By Christine Canelos Welsh

Bill,
You are correct about our relative ages, but I'm curious to know what tipped you off.

You are also correct that ignorance and poor behavior know no gender. Neither do they seem to know any other boundary, whether it be cultural, economic, or philosophical.

If I have written about gender biases, I can't help it, having grown up under it. Though times have changed for the better, women are still having to break barriers in many arenas. I am pleased to see my neices and my daughter pursuing advanced degrees in many fields, including the sciences. I was encouraged to go to college to meet men.

As to MY age, I will only admit that the CTA bus I rode to school ran on electric overhead cables and there are Joni Mitchell albums and a fringed leather vest in the back of my closet. (Hey, that stuff is coming back in style!) :-]

Thank you for your kind words. If more people were so open-minded, the whole world would be a more peaceful place. I have been blessed to have many supportive people in my life, which more than balances the occasional trogolodyte I run across.

Regards,
Christine

Life not special?

Posted By Christine Canelos Welsh

Gary P.
I know that what you mean by "not special" is "not designed" but I couldn't help but be struck by how you applied the word.

In all the uncountable randomness of the universe, life came about and against uncountable odds it came about that I am here, I know who I am, and I can even contemplate those odds in the first place? Further, the molecules in my body might eventually be disbursed into space and help to form something that another stargazer in a different when and where can find in her telescope?

Phew! Not just special, but bloody marvelous - on the face of that what does it really matter whether it was designed or not?

I can hardly wait to go observing!

More on Women in the Bible

Posted By Christine Canelos Welsh

Paul T:
You mentioned earlier that Paul's exclusion of women in the church was a generally reference to temple priestesses and false idols. Would you be so kind as to provide that specific reference? Elsewhere I note that Paul specifically "desires" to exclude women from "every place that men should pray." (1 Timothy 8-12)

But the Bible is a big place, and it should be obvious that I haven't read the whole thing!

Thank you in advance,
Christine

Yep. This is why I permanently gave up television about three years ago.

Can't trust a darn thing you didn't see or hear for yourself.

Birds across the moon

Posted By Christine Canelos Welsh

Okay bird experts can you help me out? Last Friday we had a nice sucker hole from about 10 - 11 pm and I was out doing some lunar observing. I was seeing birds shooting across the moon at a rate of about one per minute. It was like a meteor shower in reverse, bright background with a fast dark object shooting by! They were all heading north. Any ideas about what they might have been? I live in northeastern Illinois. It was pretty cool!
Thanks,
Christine

Sunset Promenade

Wow - you folks are inspiring!
I wish I could take pictures like yours, but I'm "equipmentally challenged".
But as long as you're doing "artsy" too, here's one of mine.
It sure was a beautiful evening!

My humble dob

Posted By Christine Canelos Welsh

Me and my humble dob at the Wisconsin Observers Weekend (WOW).

Wish I could include a picture of my canine observing companion, but he's gone to the Dog Star just last March. This was my first trip out without him - sure do miss the old boy.

If you are in the midwest, the WOW is a real nice event. Sponsored by the Newstar group.

If you don't mind...

Posted By Christine Canelos Welsh

....help me out a bit with this fascinating hobby.

Tell me, are you folks capturing all these great shots in your own backyards or do you have to go tracking in the wilds??

I'm also trying to read up on and visualize the equipment you are using. Specific to birding/wildlife/photography? Dual duty for astronomy? This "equipmentally challenged" reader would love to see what you are using - along the lines of "Pictures of my birding optics" maybe?

Thanks,
Christine
