Sigma lenses - opinions?

Posted By Mark Hansen

Any opinions on these two lenses?

Sigma 80-400 F4-5.6 EX OS APO (around $1000 US)
Sigma 100-300 EX IF HSM APO (around $700)

I like the extra "reach" of the 400mm and the image stabilization of the first. The second is constant F4 and sounds great for the price. I plan to use this on a Nikon D50 DLSR to shoot wildlife at a moderate distance (ducks on the water, deer, etc). I've looked at the Nikon VR equiv and they are just too pricey for my pocket.

This will replace a mediocre 70-300mm Tamron LD. Thank You.

6.3 SCT focal reducer on a refractor?

Posted By Mark Hansen

Anyone every use an adapter such as JMI's # ADPT2THREAD to attach a 6.3
Celestron or Meade SCT focal reducer to a 2" refractor for imaging? I believe the parts would all attach without problem, but would
it reach focus or have issues such as vignetting using a DSLR?

Hawk I.D. help?

Posted By Mark Hansen

This predator came zigzagging through the trees after a dove and caught it mid-air. I've looked through my guides and cannot get a firm I.D. It is much smaller than a redtail, and a little larger than a kestrel. Taken in overcast lowlight conditions here in Central Michigan. I approached carefully and this was as close as it would let me get with the bigma and D50.

Any ideas on what it is?

Rufous-sided Towhee

Posted By Mark Hansen

Saw this fellow exploring my parents' lawn. I'd forgot about their unusual kicking motion to scratch up insects. I haven't seen one in several years, so was glad to take his pic even though the good bird lens was back home shocked Taken with Nikon D50 and Tamron 70-300 LD at 300.

Saw this fellow on the back deck. I've seen high-schoolers with this same hair. Taken with the FZ20 at 12x.

ID Help Please

Posted By Mark Hansen

Spotted this pair under some pines at the edge of a field. They are about half the size of a Mourning Dove. I've looked through all my books / guides without finding them. Help is greatly appreciated! Taken with D50 and Sigma Bigma here in Central Michigan.
