Jupiter 12/07/03

Posted By Paul Maxson

I posted this elsewhere, but the Solar System forum seems appropriate too. Jupiter was quite nice Sunday morning to me for about 20 minutes, then the clouds rolled in (right in the middle of another exposure, btw) and haven't left yet...kinda like in-laws, huh? :-)

Saturn 12/24/03

Posted By Paul Maxson

It's not as good as Wes or Antonios' images but not too bad for a C8 under average conditions. I processed it in K3CCD and took the best 800 of 2000 images, saved as a 32bit Fit, then combined the three fit files in Registax 2 and did minor wavelets and PaintShop Pro processing. For some reason, this particular avi files would only produce 2 images when processed in Registax. It really looked much better than that so I'm not sure what's going on. However, this processing method produced decent results.

Happy Holidays!!

2x Barlow lenses

Posted By Paul Maxson

Does anyone have any experience or opinions about the pluses and/or minuses of the Meade 2x Apochromatic Barlow vs the Celestron Ultima 2x Barlow? Both are about the same price ($75-80). I'm read up on the Televue 2x Barlow, I have a 3x Televue barlow which doesn't perform as well as a Meade 2x-3x barlow that I have had for over 20 years and I'm leery about going with the 2x version. Besides, I'd like a shorty barlow.

3 Planet Collage

Posted By Paul Maxson

Taking a cue from Canon Lau, I produced a link to the following image. It is a collage of Mars, Jupiter and Saturn all taken within 10 hours with my C8 at F/25. They nicely show the size diferences between each planet. I was hoping to add Venus to the mix, even had it centered in the C8 and was waiting for it to get higher in the daytime sky until...you guessed it...clouds rolled in. Anyway, each image has specifics on it's individual image on my webpage that I have also linked. Fun project!!

Jupiter and Saturn

Posted By Paul Maxson

Here are links to images of Jupiter and Saturn from last night and this morning. Neither are spectacular, but both are usable.

Barlow question

Posted By Paul Maxson

I'm not sure that this is the right forum, if not I apologize. Anyway, I just bought a Celestron 2x Shorty Ultima barlow. To my amazement when I put it in my C8 with my CCD the final F/R came out at F/25, or the barlow was acting like a 2.5x barlow. I bought the 2x barlow to be a 2x amplification, I already have a 2.5x Powermate and 3x Televue. I wanted the 2x for imaging on a smaller scale. I am wondering of anyone else has seen this and if there is some kind of a workaround.

Thanks a bunch!!

Eyepieces

In your opinions, where are the really good places to find a wide range of the better eyepieces and barlows? Availability and knowledge...

Thanks!!

Jupiter anyone?

Posted By Paul Maxson

Here is a link to an image I took of Jupiter this morning. The seeing was fair with a light breeze...of course the temp was about 55 degrees F, so I guess I shouldn't complain. smile

Jupiter

Here are links to 3 images I made of Jupiter over the weekend. Seeing was, oddly, better in the evening than the morning. Morning temps were in the mid to low 50's.

...and maybe a couple of Sunspot images

Posted By Paul Maxson

Here are links to images I made of Sunspot group 536 over the weekend. Seeing was decent. Shot with my C8 with a 7" Baader homemade filter. Prime focus, 1/500 sec exposure on the Toucam 740.
