Why the Dems hate America

Hi Greg:  Thanks for the answer.  I think you speak for a lot of Republicans.  I doubt Rich will chime in, but you never know.

Personally, I will do what I can in the 2024 primary to support one of Trump's R opponents.  Also, I would vote for a reasonably moderate democrat over Trump, as I did in 2020.  (My characterization of Biden as a moderate D will certainly spin up the usual suspect).  cool

I'm no economist, but I am an optimist.  I think the economy will rebound soon enough, no matter who sits in the oval office.

My nightmare scenario is a democrat I could not support running against Trump.  Is AOC going to be 35 in two years?  I don't think I could ever vote for a democrat from the progressive wing or a socialist like Bernie (obviously too old, but you know what I mean).  Jim

A key thing to remember is that the deceitful strategy of D investment in Colorado's own election denying MAGA senate candidate failed.  That is probably a function of Colorado's political make up.  We are more blue than red now, but on both sides most folks are pretty reasonable.  Don't get me wrong, we have our share of "Let's Go Brandon" flags and of course Rich lives here, but usually the more moderate candidates are favored.  Trump did not win Colorado in either election.

So, I tend to agree with James and Brian above.  This was dirty politics, but the risk of actually installing a MAGA Republican over the incumbent D, Michael Bennett, is vanishingly small.  It is upsetting to me not because of the downside risk, but because of it's sheer dirtiness.

Now, if you wanted to say that this is part of a coordinated national campaign to paint all Republicans as wild-eyed crazies who are bought and paid for by the Trump wing, then I would agree.  Moderate Republicans face that sort of BS every day.  My wife about had a fit when her tipsy numb-nuts brother-in-law loudly proclaimed at dinner this spring that all republicans are "deplorable racists."  He allowed for no exceptions, clearly forgetting that for once in his New York life, his audience was not monolithically like-minded.

I am not denying that dirty politics is a two way thing nowadays.  Certain R's try to paint all D's in the US, even someone like President Biden, as being to the left of Che Guevara.  It has apparently gotten to the point where the deep lies and mischaracterizations of a polarized nation have become pure and undeniable revealed truth for many.  This is perhaps an existential threat to the fabric of the nation.  Time will tell.

Ok, I understand your point.  It already happened once.  The press made Donald Trump the first go-round.  The other R candidates never stood a chance with Trump being lauded with the entirety of the media's attention.  Satan probably has more integrity than the press though...

Back to your cartoon.  The one sided nature of the hearings does not bother me.  If there are criminal referrals or if the DOJ decides to prosecute after it's own ongoing investigations, then we will all have a chance to see what Trump's defenses might be.  If any.

This is not the first or last one-sided hearing in Congress.  It is what the majority party does.  It is easy to ignore while we wait for the real trial.  If any.  I still think that the hearings and raids will backfire immensely if they can not bring Trump to a settlement to avoid prosecution or bring a compelling case against Trump in a real trial.

I really hope there is a real trial by the way.  I would love to see Trump pay for any crimes, and it would not bother me to see him exonerated if that is where the evidence goes.  A real trial would be historic and would certainly give us something to talk about in the final lame-duck two years of Biden's presidency.

I think I ought to clarify the "backfire" comment.  I do not think that people like me will be brought back into the fold if the hearings fizzle out with no real results.  In other words, I think that the hearings have amply demonstrated Trump's malfeasance.   He had already lost my vote a few years ago, long before January 6.  I think they could backfire because Trump would loudly proclaim "exoneration" and "witch hunt" if the hearings fizzle at the end without a prosecution or other tangible results.  This will embolden Trump and his legion of followers.  A compliant press will once again (actually continue to) make the national story all about Trump, and then his nomination will be inevitable.  Can Biden or a surrogate beat him again?  I am not confident of that.  Jim

This is exactly how I feel about you and your sides portrayal of Trump!  On one hand he is a buffoon with no intellect whatsoever, and on the other he is an evil mastermind who planned and coordinated a nearly successful coup.   Personally, I think Biden and Trump are both a lot closer to senile incompetents than evil masterminds.  That does not mean that I think their personal motivations are identical.

So I take it that right wing media is not covering this???

Trump pleaded the fifth and wouldn't testify in the NY AG case against the Trump organization.

To bad that can be used against him in a civil trial.

And if it's all a damn witch hunt like he always says show us the damned search warrant if you're so innocent.
Before anyone shows up and calls you a liar Jim, using 25 point font and all caps, we ought to acknowledge that the right wing media is covering this story.  https://www.foxnews.com/politics/trump-arrives-deposition-new-york-attorney-general-letitia-james-civil-investigation

It is always interesting to read and contrast sources like Fox and your link to the WaPo.  In this instance, the actual coverage is not that different.

Hi Brian:  When I said "your side" to Rod, I meant the left in general.   There are plenty of articles out there having a left slant that paint Trump as an evil mastermind fully in control of the Jan 6 run-up for instance.  I tend to think that Trump acts like more the buffoon than mastermind, his ego is perhaps without equal, and this motivates him to do or say all sorts of stupid things.

I doubt that he is objectively all that unintelligent.  He is probably quite smart.  It is just that he has no filters or guardrails at all, because of his ego.  I think I am agreeing with you and James both, but we are probably saying it differently.
