Dumb Eyepiece Questions (from me)

Posted By Harry Aiello

For a $50 investment in a zoom you can try all focal lengths in your scope with and without barlow. Once you decide on the FLs you need you can then buy a quality ep of your choice in those focal lengths. After one year of observing I seem to have ended up with 6 scopes so far with diffenent focal lengths so I start with a zoom in each one and figure it out from there. The zoom will tell you how high you can go and also how low you can go and keep the sky dark for a particular scope. Just another idea.

I think I would hang that one on the wall. Great shot, great bird, great lens, patience and skill.

Get a nice binocular and head for a darker site. You have good equipment and the best seeing in the country. Advice from another beginer, I don't play golf, you must be very good at it.

Durability of Coatings

Posted By Harry Aiello

Last year I bought a 30+ year old C-8 from a fella in California who claimed the optics were pristine. When it arrived I was pleased to see that the scope, mirror and corrector all looked brand new. This one is so old it is the "holes in the forks" model.
I also have a C-90 that I bought new in the mid seventies that still looks new.

Celestron 100ED Spotter tested

Posted By Harry Aiello

Doug, thanks for that report. I for one was waiting on that information. It seems a shame that Celestron is so close but not quite on with this scope. Do you plan to pursue it any further? I look forward to any other info you come up with. Thanks again.

Orion Starmax 90mm Mak

Hello, James
The issues most often quoted with this scope are narrow field of view and cool down time. I have the 127 model and it does a fine job. The price is right for sure. On a photo tripod it can be used as a spotter.

That's a great shot. How do you get rid of the dark spots where the rings meet the planet in the back?
