Baader Genuine Orthos

Posted By Larry Thaxton

Hi Kurt,

I have complete sets of Baader orthos and really like them. They provide highly detailed images with good light through put and do so at a reasonable price. eye relief is good until you get down to the 6mm and 5mm where it can be tight. Maybe too tight if you wear glasses when observing. Many folks point out that the UO volcano-top orthos are easier to use in short focal lengths given their shape. That has been my experience too but the Baaders are no problem and I prefer their coatings.

80mm TSA?

Posted By Larry Thaxton

Did that "birdie" mention anything about a TSA or TOA 170ish scope? One has been long rumored but I am still waiting as is my NJP.

Review on 32mm. ERFLE

Posted By Larry Thaxton

Hi John,

I bought on recently to use in a Cave 8" F/8 scope. A few days ago I dropped it into the diagonal of an FS-78 with an extender Q in place. At F/12.8 it was sharp right to the edge. At F/8 it is pretty much the same with a very slight fall off over at the edge of the field. I might not have noticed it if I had not been looking for it.

13 ethos vs. 13T6

Posted By Larry Thaxton

I bought an Ethos early on and compared it to my 13mm T-6. Not enough "Wow!" for the price to me. My comparison was a Meade 14mm UWA, a 13mm T-6 and the 13mm Ethos through a couple of APOs FS-78 and TMB 175. Sold the Ethos for what it cost me and never looked back.

bang for the buck and what does it means

Posted By Larry Thaxton

I guess I use the term "best bang for the buck" to mean excellent performance at a low price. A few years ago I bought a Cave 8" F/8 Model "B" Deluxe that is optically superb as were most Caves. It was $770 complete with mount, drives, finder, etc. and on casters so it rolls in and out of the garage in moments. While I usually prefer refractors for visual use, it will show more detail than most 6" APOs I have tried. The APOs still have a slight edge in sharpness as they are unobstructed, but you would be shocked at how much performance you get for such a little outlay. Hence "bang for the buck" or "fun for my viewing dollar."

From the sound of it, your scope is "good period" and what others say should have little impact on your enjoyment. Following the various threads on AM and "the other site" I am often fascinated at how much time folks spend trying to convice one another why such and such a scope is better when personal satisfaction is really the bottom line. Newtonians like the old Cave are often criticized for being too large, too heavy, etc. I seldom think of any of that when I am glued to a stunning image at the eyepiece of an out of date focuser on an out of date scope that cost less than many popular eyepieces.
