Astreya Refractors

Posted By Larry Thaxton

A fellow observer recently sent a website for AstoTech carbon-tube refractors using Astreya objectives. The objective is described as a four-element SuperAPO. The carbon tube assemblies are beautiful and overall the scopes with the Astreya lens looks very interesting. Anybody out there actually using them?

12.5" F/5 Portaball - 5mm Pentax XW on planets, 14mm Meade UWA for medium power and a 30mm Leitz 88 degree for wide field.

Takahashi FS-152 - 4mm or 5mm TMB mono or Pentax SMC ortho, 7mm SMC Pentax ortho or XW, 30mm Leitz

Takahashi with Mk V binoviewer - 6mm or 7mm Pentax SMC orthos, 14mm Nikon APM Widefields (the moon through these is a near religious experience!), 25mm Pentax SMC Kellners

C-10 Celestron Pacific - 10mm Pentax XW, 14mm Meade UWA, 19mm Panoptic. (Excellent old classic scope!)

C-8 Quick-grab: 10mm XW, 19mm Panoptic and 30mm Ultiman (limited to 1 1/4" at the moment)

10" Mak- APM/Wirth Custom on NJP

Posted By Larry Thaxton

Recently picked to replace my FS-152. It is a 10" F/12.5 from APM, custom made by Wirth around Sital optics reportedly having supersmooth surfaces. Now if the darned weather will let me have a chance to see what it will do I can post a performance report.

Interesting Site w/ eyepiece tests

Posted By Larry Thaxton

I ran across this site recently and found it contains useful eyepiece test results. Not sure yet how to navigate the site to reach all of the tests but here are a few to start:

Note -More eyepiece tests are listed in the German language site.

NJP Discontinued

Posted By Larry Thaxton

Just read a post by a Japanese friend mentioning that Takahashi has discontinued the NJP mount. Too bad, it is a fine piece of equipment and an excellent platform for many uses. The EM-400 certainly overlaps it in terms of performance, but the NJP looks so much better.

Eyepiece dust cap source - not Orion

Posted By Larry Thaxton

I am looking for a source for plastic caps for various eyepieces. Orion has many sizes, none I am looking for though. I need 39mm- 40mm range caps for a couple of old Galoc eyepieces and a UO Pro series ortho. Any suggestions?

CUSTOM EYEPIECE CASE

Posted By Larry Thaxton

I am considering a custom wood case for my planetary eyepieces and am wondering who folks might recommend. Wood is preferred and something nice as well- fancy wood but a durable finish. Any suggestions?

THANKS!
