How heavy is Too Heavy???

Posted By Jeffrey Welch

I'm looking at used Great Polaris mounts. (accurate GOTO in sub $1000 zone)

My two scopes are ~13lb. OTA only. (6")

So, if the capacity of the GP is only 15lb., by the time I add balance weights, I'm too heavy?

Yes or no?

Thanks!

Filters at prime focus ?

Posted By Jeffrey Welch

How / where do you do you put filter(s) in front of a 35mm body?

Thanks in advance for any help / suggestions as I'm just getting started.
The thought occurred to me as I got back my fat 4th q moon pix yesterday and the "mares" are very bright. The whole thing looks washed out compared to what I'm used to seeing here.

FWIW - I'm shooting 400spd Fuji print film in an old AE-1 on my 6" LOMO Mak. and trying to focus through the normal viewfinder. (for now)

Anyone using Fuji Astia, Provia, Sensia here?

Posted By Jeffrey Welch

I saw a good review of Provia, but I haven't seen anyone post about it here.

IR-only imaging

Posted By Jeffrey Welch

There are a few great sites on the ability to get good effects using low-pass filters and un-IR-filtered ccds. (similar to shooting IR sensitive film)

With the fantastic cloud patterns showing up on Cassini's Saturn images in IR, I'm wondering if anyone here is trying it.

Off-axis Guider Recommendations needed please

Posted By Jeffrey Welch

Your recommendations / advice is welcome !

I'm entry level working with a 6" F14 Mak, and a 6" F6 SN.

I've got a used CG5 and it definitely needs to be guided.

Thanks, Jeff.

Have you heard of a reverse-T-ring?

Posted By Jeffrey Welch

I'm wondering if theres a way to convert a Nikon mount lens to be a small refractor for imaging with a ccd.
So, I would need somthing that acted like the camera body, giving me a thread to use on the other side to mount a focuser or whatever.

I know this is the FILM forum, but this is the audience with the lens experience, so I thought you guys might know.

Thanks!

How many here use a gas purge...

...to keep humidity levels down inside the camera?

I'm trying to get a feel for how much of a concern it is.

Thanks!

Refractor "light-gathering" question

Posted By Jeffrey Welch

Do two refractors of the same fL/Diam. ratio have the same light gathering ability in terms of imaging?

I'm trying to learn here, not start an argument.

Thanks.

Has anyone seen or heard about the Bushnells ??

Posted By Jeffrey Welch

The 4.5" Newtonian "talking" GOTO looks really attractive for a real beginner scope for less than $200!

I'm especially looking for anyone who has looked through a recent Bushnell reflector or heard from a friend.

Thanks.
