A Fungus Amongus

Posted By Edward Acklin

...as Dick Biondi used to say (anyone remember WLS from early-mid 60s?) This thing grows on the Cedar tree, then
sends spores out to other plants where another cycle of its life brings it back to the Cedar for the winter. Does this in summer...cute, huh? I looked out my window one day and saw a whole bunch of them all over the cedars in the fencerows. Hadn't been there that morning. Just popped out.

Killdeer doing the broken-wing dance

This little mama was very active. We have an MPEG of this somewhere but it's too big to post. Fearless little thing, though.

Carolina Wren nesting on our porch

Posted By Edward Acklin

Brave little thing. She made a nest in a planter on our back porch just about 2 feet from the door. Stayed there until they hatched and all flew away. Got where she'd feed them while we were sitting at the back porch table having coffee. Picture from 2002.

Antique Rose

Posted By Edward Acklin

My wife & I located our house on the site of a homestead that goes back over 100 years. In the deal we got some old black walnuts, a huge cherry tree maybe 3 1/2' thick, a cedar about 60ft high, etc. While cleaning up some vines around one of the walnut trees, I came across a single, tiny shoot of a rose bush. It grew for a couple of years, and last year had its first blossoms, of which this is one.As a sidelight, the fellow who dug the hole for my tornado shelter, himself 81 years old, said he remembered the rosebush from when he played in the yard as a kid.

This guy was almost posing for us. Looking this way and that, not at all afraid of us or the car. Hung around for quite awhile.

Krombach Wetzlar question

Posted By Edward Acklin

I've got a Krombach Wetzlar 6x35 binocular that's a really nice companion to my 102mm refractor. Problem is, I know nothing about the company. Anybody know anything about it?
