Mirror Specs

Posted By Ed York

Mark Harry finished up my 8" f4.9 mirror and sent it to the coaters!

He sent me these specs, are they good? wink

Specs are 1/14th wavefront error PV, .97 Strehl, and average RTA of about .5

Excited about my scope upgrade - can you tell?

As I close in on the end of the Messier list, I have 101 down, 8 to go. Hey wait that's only 109.

Can someone tell me what happened to 102?

Re: Once and for all..........what mirror coating?

Posted By Ed York

I had a guy that does premium mirrors explain to me the mechanics of why not enhanced. I would screw it up if I explained the whole thing, but he said something along the lines of the extra brightness seems to have more impact on the light scatter (emphasizes the imperfections - no mirror is perfect) so what you get in extra light is offset by a reduction in contrast. Plus for what little you might get doesn't justify the expense.

Spacers vs Extension Tube

Posted By Ed York

Recently I tweaked my scope including swapping out the focuser. I did not swap tube, so to keep the same location, I had to add spacers to make up for the shorter focuser. Recently I had the thought that I could remove the spacers and use an extension tube (1/5" either way). The extension tube has a filter thread (2") so I would not have to swap the filter if I swapped EP's and by removing the extension tube, I have instant in travel for photography. I can't really think of any upside to the spacers, other then the cost of sizing up filters (which now means they can be used on my 2" Ep's as well).

So should I go with Spacers or the Extension Tube.
