FPS VS. QUALITY

Posted By Oliver Pettenpaul

Hi Ido,

I'm not too familiar with the SAC7B but I suppose it's a USB1.X long exposure ToUcam family device ? If so, shooting at 25fps lowers image quality noticably. USB1.X has a maximum bandwith of 12MBit/s, transfering 640*480*8Bit*3Pixels at 25fps would in theory require 175.78 MBit/s. To achieve the framerate over the slow bus a lossy online compression is performed by cam and driver - the higher the framerate the worse image quality. Personally I don't use my ToUcams faster than 10fps.
This subject is the reason why todays planetary imagers long for cameras with USB2 or FireWire interfaces with 400MBit/s or more allowing much higher framerates without quality degradation by compression.

Best regards & clear skies,
Oliver

New Philips USB2 webcam SPC-900NC

Posted By Oliver Pettenpaul

First offers in the webshops demand about 80EUR in europe but the cams don't seem to be available yet. Looks like Philips replaces the complete ToUcam range with USB2 devices:

spc900nc - VGA CCD, USB2
spc700nc - VGA CMOS, USB2
spc600nc - VGA CMOS, USB2
spc300nc - QVGA CMOS, USB2
spc200nc - CIF CMOS, USB2

As always only the CCD device should be interesting for us.

Cheers & clear skies,
Oliver

Hi Wes,

phew, what a result for a 10arcsec mars grin I would have been more than happy to obtain such a result during the 2003 opposition. Fascinating what todays top-notch equipment can do in the right hands. Excellent !

Cheers & clear skies!

Hi Jim,

a phantastic result, congratulations. If this is possible at 10arsec, what can we expect for the opposition ? 8O grin

DMK 31BF03 1024x768 arrived

Posted By Oliver Pettenpaul

Hi Dodi,

very interesting. Have you been able to compare the pixel sensitivity of the 31BF03/ICX204AL with that of your 21BF04/ICX098BL ? If sensitivity is good and real ROI in the cam with higher framerates is implemented this should be a real killer cam 8)

Best regards & clear skies,
Oliver
