I'd love to build an observatory on my garage roof. I could disguise it as a pigeon coupe. grin

Helix Hercules Single Arm Alt Az Mount Wt Limit?

Posted By James Suarez

I found my Meade 102ED f/9(15lbs) too much for the Helix Single arm. Maybe for low power views, but at higher mags the vibrations were too much. 80mm refractors were a better match.

FWIW, the 8" Helix fork did better with the Meade 102 , but I now use a Giro 3 which is a bit smoother and with a cw can handle heavier ota's. wink

Gibraltar & G5 Dimensions for Mounting FS128

Posted By James Suarez

Steven Jindra said:

I am looking to mount my FS-128 on a Gibraltar Mount for quick and easy astro and terrestrial setup. Would anyone provide me the measurement from the center alt axis to the top of the bottom plate and the inside saddle dimension from one side to the other for the Gibraltar and for the Gibraltar 5 saddles?

I expect to install a plate (probably to the bottom of the saddle) extending to the forward and the rear, to install the two OTA mounting rings to.

Anyone using this combination or similar? Okay? Problems?

Thanks
Steven JIndra

Telepod head(same as Gibraltar): 2-1/2" from center alt axis to cradle plate. 5-5/16" wide

Gibraltar (5): 2-7/8" and 6-7/16" wide.

I think the FS-128 would be a bit much for the Gibraltar(5) as it's a much larger ota than the NP-127 which it can accommodate. I'd consider a GIRO III with counter weight or something similar.
