Anyone Try for the DAYTIME Naked-Eye Comet?

Posted By Linton Rohr

Haven't had any luck spotting it naked-eye, as opposed to McNaught a couple years back.
Saw a great image of it today though, taken in Australia.
I just posted that in the Comets forum.

more worries concerning NASA

Posted By Linton Rohr

"Lack of funding" is a problem many of us can relate to these days.
And unfortunately, we're the ones funding NASA - and everything else.
I'm sure I could find some wastefully spent funds to redirect to NASA, given the chance.

Come Visit us While we Still Exist

I've been saying for years, California is America's test lab for liberalism.
We had a chance to change course in the last election,
but instead we got more Brown and Boxer! :S
Californians, sadly, deserve what they get now.
I'm on my way out - to the red state of Utah. smile

Very interesting story, Christine. Thanks for sharing.
It may be two years old, but I somehow missed it the first time around.

Chaco Culture National Historical Park

Great shots, Jim. Thanks for posting them.
I'm hoping to visit Chaco Canyon later this year.
It's one of the many Native American treasures preserved in the Four Corners area.
I've barely scratched the surface thus far.

Naked Eye Sunspot

Posted By Linton Rohr

Alan French said:

Sunspot 1476 is easily visible by eye alone through a shade #14 welder's glass. So if you have a shade #14 welder's glass, or proper solar filter, check it out.

While spots are more detailed through a properly filtered solar telescope, it's always fun to see them without optical aid.

Clear skies, Alan

Wow! That is a big one, Alan!
I've been trying to spot them lately, with no luck until now.
That's probably about the size that Venus will appear in the June transit, right?
It's looking really nice in my double-stacked Lunt. smile

Eclipse Sequence

Posted By Linton Rohr

Nice images, Tyler! Thanks for sharing.
I had a great experience in Page, at the event hosted by the Glen Canyon NPS folks. We were on a hilltop at the west end of Lake Powell, with a nice low horizon to the west. Our new home in Torrey was in the annularity zone, but just barely, and I wanted to be right on the center line. I knew I'd made the right decision when I saw Andy Lunt and his team setting up their Lunt Solar booth next to me. ;^) Got some great views through their 152mm, before watching the eclipse in my own 60mm. We had several dozen volunteers on hand, with a wide variety of setups, so the number of visitors at my scopes (had a white-light filter on a TV Ranger, too) was reasonable enough to allow my wife and I plenty of eyepiece time.
I've been enjoying some great images online this morning, but it was great to watch it in real time. Seeing the moon gobble up sunspots and filaments, Bailey's Beads at 2nd and 3rd contact, the Ring of Fire itself, and the sunset over a distant butte while still in the final partial phase were all just fantastic! Feeling the air drop from around 95 to perhaps 70 in that short period was pretty neat, too.
All in all, one of the most amazing events I've ever seen! Astronomical, or otherwise!
