NGC 6621/22 - Arp 81

Posted By Frank Gelsdorf

Charles Hakes recently started a thread asking for comparisons of images of M51 with amateur equipment with a scaled down Hubble image. This comparison motivated me to look again at a few raw images of small faint galaxies I took a while ago. I took a few shots of Arp 81 with my C14 and an ST10 camera just to see how these faint fuzzies would look like (binned 3x3, 5x1min exposure). Well, after a lot of processing and noise reduction and catalogue review (PS, NeatImage, USNO B1.0) here is the result. Not Hubble of course.....and no color

Comments welcome

Re: C5+

I have been using the NGCMax setup from JMI on my C5+ for years. It is a bolt on installation, in my opinion it works very well and it is almost like GoTo if you don't mind to move the scope yourself.

My Mars

Hi Brian

I have started using a Hartman mask (aperture mask with eg 3 holes at a certain radius) to focus my scope. As soon as the three images merge you are at least quite close to focus.

Hope this helps

Another Webcam Question

Harddisk space is used up pretty fast. I use a Logitech quickcam with 640x480 resolution. At 5 frames/second a 60 sec AVI creates aproximately 250Mbyte file size.

Aurora from 30* north

Here is a digicam shot from Vermont. This aurora is certainly the best I have seen so far. The image does not do it justice.

CCD and USB Capacity

Posted By Frank Gelsdorf

I use a ATEN USB/Cat5 extender. It costs about $100 and allows to connect USB devices via standard Cat-5 network cable. Max cable length is 100 ft. Works very well.

Hi Mark

very nice image. This is indeed a pretty large object. I wonder how it would look like with a total of 8h exposure..
