Saturn from 17th November, reprocessed

Posted By Anthony Wesley

We've had nothing but cloud here the last few days, so out of frustration I've gone back over the Saturn data I collected on the 17th and re-worked it.

For some reason the LU images showed lots of horizontal line noise, but using Maximum Entropy deconvolution in Astra Image removed it very nicely.

Finally patience paid off and I had some decent seeing this morning, mostly around 8.5/10 with moments up to 9 or 9.5/10.

Here's an of Jupiter taken just before 6am local time.

Equipment: 13.1" f/5.5 newtonian, 5x powermate + filter wheel and Astronomik RGB filters,
PGR Dragonfly Express firewire camera
Linux + Coriander to capture, Win2k + Registax, Astra Image, Neat Image and GIMP to process.

Here are three images of Jupiter from this mornings work, the seeing was only average at around 5/10 but everything else was good. I ended up resizing the images down to 2/3 their original size.

I've compared these images to Chris's amazing image in his other thread, and it's nice to see a lot of the same detail, but of course my images are smaller :-)

Red channel Jupiter

Of all the imaging runs I took this morning (between 3.30am and 5.30am) only one of them was really worthwhile - the seeing steadied only for less than a minute, long enough for me to grab this sequence with the red filter.

Here are some images of Jupiter from this morning. After many weeks of poor seeing in my normal observing site (my backyard) I tried moving to another location and found some good seeing.

cheers, Anthony
