Denkmeier Eyepiece Smudges

Posted By Peter Glus

Just had a strange experience with a pair of Denk 21s I wanted to pass along. Got these from a fellow AMarter, and noticed a significant amount of grease on the eyelense...turned out to be lubricant that bled from the rotatable eyeguard mechanism. Morale of the story is -- if you have this problem -- dont panic, just pop off the eyeguard retainer ring and clean the lube off. I guess this lubricant was supposed to make smooth the eyeguard ring movement...Id rather have some metal to metal rubbing than bleeding lubricant.

Giant Focal Reducer for Large SCTs

Posted By Peter Glus

I am getting a C14, and would like to determine the config for maximum FOV. I read somewhere that the "normal" f/6.3 reducers vignette the light path significantly, and the "Giant" one from Lumicon apparantly does not. My instinct is that the narrowest of either the:

1. Eyepiece Fieldstop
2. Baffle Tube Diameter
3. Reducer Lens

Will limit the actual FOV. Can anyone chime in here?

Re: Pricing?

You could check this out by looking up past inactive ads. You do this by going to the "classified tab" which shows astro and non-astro items, and then type in your search. This will bring up all ads currently in the database that were not deleted by sellers. Frankly, I have found this feature invaluable.

Protocol for When Things Go Bad

Posted By Peter Glus

Paid for an item here, and waited 4 weeks. Emailed the seller and he said he had a personal emergency and didn't get it out...he apologized and offered a refund. I accepted the refund. That was 5 weeks ago. I have emailed him a few times, w/ no response and have not recived the refund. Silence. What bothered me is that he aparantly had the time to relist the item and sell it again, during the time period that he was supposed to refund me (so his "personal emergency" only selectively prevented him from doing telescope business). I send him a final email, and am thinking the next step is to zing him with a zero. Any expereinces like this?

Whats Up with These Huge Refractors

Posted By Peter Glus

Holy Cow...all of a sudden there seems to be a whole bunch of VERY big refractors....8" Brant...6" D&G...6" Mogey...5" AP in the span of like 10 ads. Is this the new trend (have we completed the infatuation with small imported rich-fields!)?

Any advice on aligning a forked C14 in Azimuth?

Posted By Peter Glus

I am preparing for "first light" on a C14 and have wondered about azimuth alignment on those lare fork mounted SCTs. There must be some other solution other than to try and nudge the whole thing. Are there any rigs or devices around that could help? I was thinking about the following:

Putting one leg of the tripod on a "permanant" foot
Putting the next on a metal plate so it can move horizontally
Moving the third in the horizontal (to get azimuth movement) using a threaded rod.

Surely there must be something out there....

My new Garage Observatory

Posted By Peter Glus

My weekend project...built a dormer on the garage for my scope. Has a flip roof. Inside is a temporary platform, to be followed by a more vibration-free pier / platform combo.

Anyone have a recommendation for SCT recoating

Posted By Peter Glus

Im seriously thinking about recoating a orange tube C14. Would like to hear anyone's experiences with this...it seems like a great way to bring a high-80-percent original surface to 95+ on the prim and secondary...for 300ish. Are there downsides?
