Yes. It will add to your enjoyment of the scope and is a strong selling point.

"Do we go forward towards a new vision of an America in which prosperity is shared? Obama asked..."

This is all you need to know. If this is what you want then you know how to vote in November.

Go to the library and check out "Socialism for Dummies" to learn why the president is nowhere being one. My home town (Milwaukee) has had three Socialist mayors (all long-term) and has survived them. What it has not survived is bigotry that has led to white flight, an erosion of the tax base, and economic crisis.

In the first place, why shouldn't everyone share in prosperity? Or is it reserved only for those who are already properous?

BTW, "Astronomy for Dummies" is an excellent book by Jay Pasachoff.

Arctic Ice Expected to Hit New Low

Posted By Robert Schmall

Off on a tangent: the British TV program "Top Gear" ran an episode 5 years ago in which the idiot hosts tried to drive a modified Toyota pickup to the North Pole. They proclaimed success when they hit 78 degrees north.

Several nations are scrambling to claim drilling rights to the ice-free Arctic Sea. As my wife put it re endangered species, "Why is it that they are either endangered or hunted?" I.e., why can't we just leave it alone?

Putin is down with "O"

Hardly a ringing endorsement of either candidate. What's your point?

Romney not concerned with 47% of the voters

Jim, you are usually more thoughtful than this. Let us also include:
Those with a higher education, who tend to be liberal.
Union members
Minorities
Those who are not freeloaders but who believe that government's responsibilities include "promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty," etc.
Recent immigrants
Women

Government Charity Yields "Poverty Barons"

Posted By Robert Schmall

The report has nothing to do with entitlements, but rather with money wasted on the hiring of "consultants" by a government agency charged with international development. I don't doubt the story, although the Telegraph may have been cherry-picking items from the agency's budget, but your interpretation of it is incorrect.

Failing education system

Posted By Robert Schmall

Jim, my definitely inexpert opinion is that you are right. One of the essentials for a successful democracy is an educated electorate, and our system is no longer effective at providing that. I have heard that there is a correlation between per-pupil spending and excellence, so that the poorest districts are the worst educators. Beyond that, I have only an opinion: we cannot expect students to perform if we fail to set adequate standards and rigorously adhere to them. In other words, for example, no more social promotions-- the student gets what he earns.

Now here is a serious telescope building project-1

Posted By Robert Schmall

Except for the focuser there is nothing commercially made that will work for that thing. He will have to build everything, and even if it's an F3.5 it will have a 250 inch focal length--20 feet! Good thing he's a trucker--he'll have something that can tow it to the observing site.

Let users have Yahoo and Hotmail accounts and use aliases

Posted By Robert Schmall

A good question, but maybe it should have been broken in half:
1. Let users have yahoo and hotmail accounts?
2. Let users use aliases?

I voted against a combined question, but would have voted yes on #1 and no on #2.
