Climate Scientist Threatens Boycott of NYT Reporte

Posted By Dave Snope

Wow, you'd think with the revelations of ClimateGate that scientists would be being extra cautious to avoid the slightest appearance of impropriety in the arena of conspiracy to control the dissemination of information to the media. You don't want to look like another Phil Jones, right? No. When you are high up in your ivory tower it is as hard to shed your arrogance as it is your own skin.

Pielke Jr. writes:
Michael Schlesinger, a climate scientist at the University of Illinois, sends an message to Andy Revkin of the New York Times (via his widely circulated email distribution list) threatening some sort of boycott -- whatever that means -- of Revkin among climate scientists, for having the gall to mention my views and those of my father.

Schlesinger wrote to Revkin:
Shame on you for this gutter reportage. This is the second time this week I have written you thereon, the first about giving space in your blog to the Pielkes.

The vibe that I am getting from here, there and everywhere is that your reportage is very worrisome to most climate scientists. Of course, your blog is your blog. But, I sense that you are about to experience the 'Big Cutoff' from those of us who believe we can no longer trust you, me included.

This is like the Pope going after Martin Luther. All dissent from the orthodox must be quashed.

An Example of Newspaper Slant of AGW

Posted By Dave Snope

A question that often comes up in conversations about AGW is about why newspapers and MSM don't cover Climategate and skeptical views. Here is one answer in their own words, it's all about "social justice" and "fairness:

Tomorrow 56 newspapers in 45 countries take the unprecedented step of speaking with one voice through a common editorial. We do so because humanity faces a profound emergency....

Social justice demands that the industrialised world digs deep into its pockets and pledges cash to help poorer countries adapt to climate change, and clean technologies to enable them to grow economically without growing their emissions.... And fairness requires that the burden placed on individual developed countries should take into account their ability to bear it; for instance newer EU members, often much poorer than "old Europe", must not suffer more than their richer partners.

I'm pretty sure that Karl Marx could not have worded it better.

From: Edward Cook To: Keith Briffa, we know %&*

Posted By Dave Snope

Email sent by paleoclimatologist Ed Cook to the CRU's Keith Briffa, outlining his opinions on the current (2003) state of knowledge of past temperatures.

Note: Due to my more delicate sensibilities, and the fact that I don't have tenure and care what people think of my language, I took the liberty of editing out the profanities.

Hi Keith,

7) Publish, retire, and don't leave a forwarding address

Without trying to prejudice this work, but also because of what I
almost think I know to be the case, the results of this study will
show that we can probably say a fair bit about <100 year
extra-tropical NH temperature variability (at least as far as we
believe the proxy estimates), but honestly know f&&k-all about what
the >100 year variability was like with any certainty (i.e. we know
with certainty that we know f&&k-all).

Antarctic Ice Melt at Lowest Satellite Era

Posted By Dave Snope

When you are plied daily with emo pics of melting ice that make you feel weepy, steel yourself with the basic facts of the raw temperature data and icecap extent measurements.

The ice melt across during the Antarctic summer (October-January) of 2008-2009 was the lowest ever recorded in the satellite history. Such was the finding reported last week by Marco Tedesco and Andrew Monaghan in the journal Geophysical Research Letters:

A 30-year minimum Antarctic snowmelt record occurred during austral summer 2008–2009 according to spaceborne microwave observations for 1980–2009. Strong positive phases of both the El-Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the Southern Hemisphere Annular Mode (SAM) were recorded during the months leading up to and including the 2008–2009 melt season.

CO2 and Temperature

Posted By Dave Snope

When the Copenhagen conference flood of stories from newspapers and politicos have you feeling scared for your children's future because of runaway global warming from CO2 emissions, think of this graph to calm yourself. We are at geologically historical low levels of CO2. It has been 10-20 times higher with a relatively slight uptick in the last century, and there is NO CORRELATION TO TEMPERATURE.

Feeling The Heat From Rising Temperatures

Posted By Dave Snope

When you are feeling frowny because the IPCC says that the temperatures are climbing out of control, I think this will help you feel better:

Figure 1. Temperature trends and model results in Northern Australia. Black line is observations (From Fig. 9.12 from the UN IPCC Fourth Annual Report).

Remember that raw data behind it shows that Australia has really cooled over 100 years, and that it took a 6C/century weighted fudge factor to make the IPCC data so scary.

Now compare the raw vs the "homogenized":

Yikes again, double yikes! What on earth justifies that adjustment? How can they do that? We have five different records covering Darwin from 1941 on. They all agree almost exactly. Why adjust them at all? They’ve just added a huge artificial totally imaginary trend to the last half of the raw data! Now it looks like the IPCC diagram in Figure 1, all right … but a six degree per century trend? And in the shape of a regular stepped pyramid climbing to heaven? What’s up with that?

Climate Scientist: Quit Washing to Save Planet

Posted By Dave Snope

(Edinburgh, Scotland) Dr. David Reay of Edinburgh University is a Senior Lecturer in carbon management and Director of the Carbon Management curriculum. He is also a Fellow of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) in the School of Geosciences.

Consequently, Dr. Reay is considered a "world-renowned" expert on global warming and carbon emissions who regularly offers his insights on saving the planet.

In a recent piece in the New Scientist, Dr. Reay details his assessment of eco-crimes committed by the public. First, Reay contends that people should wash less frequently since personal hygiene and laundry are massive domestic energy users. Secondly, consumption of coffee should be eliminated or curtailed with the minimum being a switch from brewed to instant. Wasting food and replacing clothes before they're worn out are also considered eco-crimes by Dr. Reay.

Dr. Reay cites some numbers associated with energy and water savings, however, he strongly emphasizes that washing is the biggest energy hog. Reay's point is that people should learn to accept foul odors resulting from washing less frequently and wearing soiled clothing.

I pray that I never will have to sit next to this stinky unwashed kid on an airplane.

I'm thinking they he should marry Sheryl Crow, and each day they can squabble of who gets to use their allotted 1 square of toilet paper.

They do like to teach kids in college these days about the evils of coffee. The profs and activists say that the coffee growers should be made to grow food crops to feed the starving people in Africa. Of course they are idiots.

65 Million Years of Climate Change

This figure shows climate change over the last 65 million years. The data is based on a compilation of oxygen isotope measurements (δ18O) on benthic foraminifera by Zachos et al. (2001) which reflect a combination of local temperature changes in their environment and changes in the isotopic composition of sea water associated with the growth and retreat of continental ice sheets. http://www.globalwarmingart.com/wiki/File:65_Myr_Climate_Change_Rev_png
