Do you know the way to San Jose?

Posted By John Whitby

Dom - I'm about ready to take up collection for you to move to the San Francisco Bay area in California. You'd fit right in in Berkeley.

World Trade Center Update

Posted By John Whitby

I had my camera with me at work today and shot a couple of photos of what was Ground Zero.

You can see that a lot of work has been done to rebuild the subway and PATH train stations in the hole. You might also notice the shrouds that are still on some of the adjacent buildings - still not repaired. This shot is looking Northeast.

One summer day the Little Red Hen found a grain of wheat.

"A grain of wheat!" said the Little Red Hen to herself. "I will plant it."
She asked the duck: "Will you help me plant this grain of wheat?"
"Not I," said the duck.
She asked the goose: "Will you help me plant this grain of wheat?"
"Not I," said the goose.
She asked the cat: "Will you help me plant this grain of wheat?"
"Not I," said the cat.
She asked the pig: "Will you help me plant this grain of wheat?"
"Not I," said the pig.
"Then I will plant it myself," said the Little Red Hen.
And she did.

Soon the wheat grew tall, and the Little Red Hen knew it was time to reap it.
"Who will help me reap the wheat?" she asked.
"Not I," said the duck.
"Not I," said the goose.
"Not I," said the cat.
"Not I," said the pig.
"Then I will reap it myself," said the Little Red Hen.
And she did.

So she reaped the wheat, and it was ready to take to the mill to be made into flour.
"Who will help me carry the wheat to the mill?" she asked.
"Not I," said the duck.
"Not I," said the goose.
"Not I," said the cat.
"Not I," said the pig.
"Then I will carry it myself," said the Little Red Hen.
And she did.

So she carried the wheat to the mill and the miller made it into flour, and she carried the flour home.
When she got there, she asked, "Who will help me make the flour into dough?"
"Not I," said the duck.
"Not I," said the goose.
"Not I," said the cat.
"Not I," said the pig.
"Then I will make the dough myself," said the Little Red Hen.
And she did.

So she put on a white apron, and mixed the dough. Soon the bread was ready to go into the oven.
"Who will help me bake the bread?" said the Little Red Hen.
"Not I," said the duck.
"Not I," said the goose.
"Not I," said the cat.
"Not I," said the pig.
"Then I will bake it myself," said the Little Red Hen.
And she did.

After the loaf had been taken from the oven it was set on the table to cool.
"And now," said the Little Red Hen, "who will help me to eat the bread?"
"I will!" said the duck.
"I will!" said the goose.
"I will!" said the cat.
"I will!" said the pig.
"No, I will eat it myself!" said the Little Red Hen.

And she did.

Rapturization -

This is really pretty funny or interesting, depending on your point of view.

What I found interesting was the statement in the article that " As a general rule, Catholics, Protestants, Lutherans, Mormons and most other Christian denominations don't buy into the idea of a secret, premillennial rapture"

ID this filter

Posted By John Whitby

I've got a 1.25" filter that says "Antares ALP Filter" on it. It has a mirror-like finish with a violet tone to it.

I can't for the life of me remember how I got it or why...anybody recognize this?

Re: How do I couple these?

Posted By John Whitby

You can't couple them - different species. The Meade adapter is for 35mm cameras and attaches using a T ring to the lens bayonette on the camera body.

You'll need a digital camera adapter for afocal use (through the eyepiece) You can't use the digital camera the way you can a 35mm through the scope. It will just photograph the inside of your scope.

Scopetronix makes all kinds of adapters, or you could make one yourself out of PVC. You can also just hold the camera to the eyepiece and shoot.

Search Anacortes site for Scopetronix (they carry it) or see the Scopetonix website, and see the Yahoo digital_astro group.

Last year a frost got all of the blossoms - and no apples. Looks good for this year. Olympus 3040Z through 40mm MaxView and TV85 - about 30 yards away. F/2.6 1/60 sec ISO 100.

School

Posted By John Whitby

The thread on gun control started to go in the direction of schools and teachers - so let me add my 2 cents. The youngest of my five kids is in 8th grade. (Heaven help me I have 4 kids in college)

The eighth-grader has been sick a lot this term and has missed a lot of school - although he's caught up on most of his work.

His history teacher called me the other afternoon, after regular school hours, and spoke for almost 45 minutes about how my son was doing, how he was trying to help him catch up, etc. He was genuinely interested in this student - he knew how he thought, what he liked about the class and what he didn't...I could go on and on.

My point is this - we hear a lot of crap about how lousy the schools are, how lousy the teachers are, etc. I've seen that, too. But here was a teacher that was genuinely interested in a student - and showed it. It restored my faith in public schools. I'm sure he cares just as much about other students - and that there are a lot more teachers out there like him.
