Pentax XL vs XW

I have several XL's eyepieces and I'm quite happy with their performance.
However, I've never looked thru an XW.
Aside from the slightly wider FOV in the XW, is there a any real difference in performance?.

It is my guess the triangular patterns were created in the fabricating process or the glass itself is defective.
