I believe you should be able to achieve focus if you find a way to move you primary mirror a bit closer... maybe a better idea than to fiddle-faddle with your tube & focuser assembly... (which would be more intrusive on your optical path) - food for thought... 8)

Had the pleasure to meet Damian in person at the Winter Star Party (Fla Keys), and he is a very cool, down to earth kind'a guy.
Nice to see that his success as a planetary imager and speaker at many of these events hasn't gotten to his head... 8)

IMHO, I'd go the C8 route... no false color, larger aperture, longer F/L (but can be reduced with a reducer/corrector if needed) and much easier to handle (much shorter tube, less stress on the mount)...
At least I would try to verify that there are no blemishes on the mirror and lense coatings... if possible.

I doubt very much you'll be able to match/beat your scope with a 5"/6" refractor...
