We knocked off #1 last night!

This was probably the most exciting home game I think we've had in the 6 years of our program. I've never seen a group of kids more determined to win a game, even after falling behind 14-0 in the first few minutes of the game. They never quit, and only led the game for 2 minutes...the last 2 smile

Category Suggestion

Posted By Russ Carroll

My classifieds wish list would contain a "Dall-Kirkham/RC" category in the classifieds under Telescopes. Today, these types of scopes mostly wind up listed under Catadioptric, with an occasional listing under reflector. Even though these higher-end scopes are Catadioptrics, they tend to get lost in the volume of traditional cat listings and really belong in a separate category. Just a thought.

Dear Congress

Would you please get back to the business of undoing the past 2 years? We will forgive you for sloppy rhetoric, but we won't forgive you if you forget why you were sent to DC.

Signed,

An Important Change by Education Dept.

Posted By Russ Carroll

Here is an op-ed by George Will painting a bleak picture of US education, but offering hopeful praise for changing testing standards that Arne Duncan wants to institute that gives states more flexibility while at the same time rewarding or penalizing results. This is a sobering piece that lays out the predicament we are facing:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2011/01/26/AR2011012605580.html

It starts with a quote from the retired CEO of Lockheed Martin Norman R. Augustine:

"Since 1995 the average mathematics score for fourth-graders jumped 11 points. At this rate we catch up with Singapore in a little over 80 years . . . assuming they don't improve."

Reagan or Louis XV?

Posted By Russ Carroll

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2011/02/17/AR2011021705270.html

Obama fancies his happy talk, debt-denial optimism to be Reaganesque. It's more Louis XV. Reagan begat a quarter-century of prosperity; Louis, the deluge.

Moreover, unlike Obama, Louis had the decency to admit he was forfeiting the future. He never pretended to be winning it.

Here in lies the problem...

I just got an e-mail warning me that the House is planning on bringing a Continuing Resolution to the floor that will fund the Federal Government at '10 levels for the rest of the year. THe e-mail goes on to say that this will be the biggest spending cut "in the history of the Nation".

This kind of gamesmanship is playing out here in California as well, where "budget cuts" are based on the projected funds needed to fund government at current levels in a subsequent year, not current levels of actual spending. Does the state think bumping the budget up equal to inflation is enough to fund next years "government"? Hardly, it is more like a double digit inflator. (I think it's 9%)

It is no wonder that a plain-talking "regular-guy" like Chris Christie is igniting so much enthusiasm on the right. Maybe his time has come. I wonder if Dick Durbin could talk him into running for President?
