M31 for Dan

Posted By Jeff Poplin

It will be hard not to remember Dan's excitement and enthusiasm when looking through the Obsession. He was always quick to come over and see what new object was in my eyepiece. His smile and friendly voice will be missed. Thank you, Dan, for adding to my observing experience.

A very fine tribute, Ivan.

LOng time question

Posted By Jeff Poplin

The crawler transport system may be the same, but the mobile launch platforms have been modified (and since updated) for shuttle use. Here's a quick link to the platform:
http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/shuttle/launch/launch-pad-mlp.html

The entire Complex 39 page:
http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/shuttle/launch/launch-complex39-toc.html

On the "Behind the Scenes" section there is a multimedia link to a special on the crawler's 40 year history. [bottom right on page] My dialup connection chokes when attempting viewing. sad

Lot's of good info...

Oppy from space

If they can get the rover down inside, I think they will be there for quite some time!
They just want to be sure they can drive OUT first! The crumbly look to the cliffs of Victoria give me pause. I can just imagine Opportunity going up to a outcrop, "ratting" a spot and causing an avalanche! Don't think Steve Squyers or Jim Bell would approve (or allow!).

That is some camera they have on that spacecraft!!!!
It is amazing what a half meter F/24 scope can do from 275 kilometers up above the thin Martian atmosphere! Can't wait for the stereo version (!) promised during the press conference.

Here's a breakdown of the scope:

Thanks for posting the "thumbnail". The hi-rez shots are incredible!

From Alascom Hill

Posted By Jeff Poplin

Very nice shot, Mike.

Alaska is on the list, but first, I have 13 more states to see here in the lower 48. Then I'll get number 49 and 50. [saving the best for last?] smile

What can you say about a place like this?

After a long drive up Hwy 12 from Escalante, I was (happily) exhausted from the views. This from an eastern overlook.

My last full night in UT, camped above Arches NP with the Obsession, waiting for nightfall.
