M-42 and Satellite

Posted By Jeff Poplin

Nice catch. If you would like to investigate further, there is a way to discover which satellite was the culprit. With your exposure times and the small footprint in the image, I would guess the sat is one of the many geostationary birds. M42 lies too close to the belt of the geos to NOT get periodic crossings. I have an old film image (somewhere) where 2 sats crossed at right angles on the frame!

Perhaps the easiest way to ID the sat is via

If you would like more info and/or help, let me know. Satellite IDing is another interesting aspect of our nocturnal wanderings.

Great Toucam shots, Jim. I can see a f/3.3 reducer in my future. Full size images are very impressive, as well as your processing routines.

Keep up the good work!

Great first shot, Steve.

From this example, I'd say you'll be moving into the "usual great stuff" category rather quickly. Keep up the good work!

The Jellyfish - IC443 (mosaic)

Another remarkable webcam shot, Jim! A quick googling of IC443 results in several other views of this nebula, but when noting the equipment used, it makes your image all the more impressive.

Good work!
