Barlow placement and magnification calc.

Posted By Bob Chester

As I understand, the power of a barlow changes with the distance from the eyepiece. How does one calculate the power when the barlow is placed in front of a diagonal?

Quality image erecting prism?

Posted By Bob Chester

Is there such a thing as a high quality image erecting prism in the 1-1/4" format or is it not necessary since most terrestial viewing is not done at very high powers. I own a high quality apo that I would like to use for eagle spotting and photography ( digital afocal ) and fear the run of the mill prism will degrade the image. Are my fears unfounded? Any recomendations are welcome.
Thanks in advance.

image processing software

Posted By Bob Chester

I need some advice on software for processing afocal digital images. The only software I currently have is the the one supplied with the camera and it is very limited. I plan to purchase 'Images Plus' but note a lot of work is done in Adobe Photoshop. The full blown 'Photoshop' is not within my budget. Is 'Photoshop Elements' adequate or even necessary if I purchase 'Images Plus'?
Also, I recently downloaded the current version of 'Registax' and it crashes the whole system every time in final processing. Anyone else experiencing this? My system is old by todays standards. PII 350mhz Win 98se.

The scopes and I pt 1

Posted By Bob Chester

Hi, my name is Bob, and I haven't made an astro purchase in three weeks. My addiction includes a home ground 6" f/6.5 and a Tak FS-78 mounted on a home-made mount. The CG-4 on the Astro-Sky Eliminator is for when the FS-78 flies solo and there is a dob mount for quick looks with the 6".

First Attempt Bald Eagle

Posted By Bob Chester

Here is my first attempt at digiscoping wildlife.
Tak FS78 / Vixen LV zoom at 8mm / Nikon 4500 at full 4X optical zoom. Range to eagle was 1/2 mile or more. Visible as only a b&w dot through 8x binocs. Any advice on digiscope focusing would be greatly appreciated.

Yet another source of eyepiece cases

Posted By Bob Chester

While wandering around a camping/hunting/fishing store (Gander Mountain) I spotted a row of pistol cases. Large assortment and price range. Below is pictured (along with my small Doskocil) the least expensive of the lot.Ten bucks. It's made to hold 4 pistols and measures approx. 11-1/2 x 16 x 5-1/2. Made by Plano, the tackle box folks. I own one of the famous Home Depot/Lowes/Menards alum cases and have to say I think this case is a step or two above it in quality. Mind me, it's no Doskocil or Pelican but definitely a good value.
Pistol cases, check'm out.

Birders Beware (on the light side)

Posted By Bob Chester

A local Minnesota birder got an unexpected visit from the F.B.I. when concerned citizens reported a possible terrorist roaming the woods with a spotting scope.
Make sure you have your ID with and maybe a Petersons field guide next time you go birding. You never know......
