Tripod Height Help

Posted By Bob Chester

AstroSky (can be found on the sponsors page)can make you a portable pier for your mount. Their prices are very good and he's in your neck of the woods. I have one of his older tripods with two sets of legs and am very happy with the product.

What size tube for a 6" mirror?

Posted By Bob Chester

I have a 6" ƒ6.5 in a 7" tube. If I were to do it again I would put it in an 8" tube.

My 7" tube is corked and flocked so the clearance is about 3/8" or less. Vignettes the 75%illuminated field at front opening (no big deal) and I had to put a spacer under the focuser to prevent the draw tube from plunging into the light path.
An 8" tube with a 6" mirror would not need a fan and provide good clearance for air currents to escape. Besides, Tak puts their 6" mirrors in 8" tubes and thats good enough for me.

Goodbye old friend

Posted By Bob Chester

Introduced a kitten to the house 3-1/2 years ago (Sammy has been posted before) and Joba would have nothing to do with him. Sammy tried as hard as he could to be her best friend but she never took to him.

Goodbye old friend

Sammy always displayed a desire to be social with other cats. But after growing up with a cat that hated him, how would he respond to Schrödinger?

Just fine.

Sun Spots?

Posted By Bob Chester

Looks like just a couple small ones right now.
You can monitor solar activity at the SOHO link below and watch to see if anything develops between now and your presentation. They have daily sunspot shots, and much more.

from Black Tail Rocks, Eagle River, Alaska

Great picture. What a beautiful piece of the planet.

I had the painful pleasure of doing the Crow Pass - Eagle River hike back in 95'. 27 miles, 45 lb. backpack, 2 days. My thighs hurt just thinking about it. Great experience. Hard to believe they ran a wilderness marathon there.
Thanks for posting the pic.
