How to Grind, Polish, and Finish Your Own Telescope Mirror
After many years of making telescope mirrors and answering questions from people who want to make their first one, I've put my complete beginner's process into a new ebook:
The No-Fail 6-Inch Telescope Mirror
The goal of this book is simple: help someone who has never made a telescope mirror successfully make their first one.
I chose a 6-inch F/10 mirror because it's an excellent size for learning the craft. The book takes you step by step through the entire process, including making the grinding tool, rough and fine grinding, polishing, making and working with a pitch lap, optical testing, figuring the parabola, and preparing the finished mirror for coating.
This isn't just a description of mirror making. It's designed as a hands-on guide, with detailed photographs, diagrams, practical tips, and links to demonstration videos so you can see many of the techniques being performed.
I also explain the little things that can make the difference between progressing smoothly and wondering what went wrong—things I've learned from making mirrors professionally and helping other mirror makers over the years.
There's something special about seeing the Moon, Jupiter, Saturn, or a deep-sky object through a telescope mirror you made yourself. My hope is that this book helps more people experience that.
