Two different photographic atlases are included: First the original Photographic Lunar Atlas, published by the University of Chicago, 1960. This is a very rare item. I am the original owner, having purchased it in 1962 from the publisher. The condition is exceptional and is in its original maroon box, and even in its original shipping box as noted in the photographs. It was used during the early 1960s and I?ve kept it as a special treasure since then. "The last great photographic lunar atlas based on images recorded from earth was undertaken by Gerard Kuiper and a number of colleagues, most notably Ewen Whitaker, in 1955. The atlas utilized photographs from five observatory collections--Mount Wilson, Lick, Pic du Midi, McDonald, and Yerkes--supplemented as necessary by new ones."

A complete set with sheets in exceptional condition, most pristine. 230 sheets forming 281 photographs of these 94 are from Mount Wilson, 63 Lick, 52 McDonald, 41 Yerkes and 31 Pic Du Midi. It is reproduced lithographically, on large sheets. The atlas is divided into 3 parts (a) Introduction of 11 sheets showing the sub division of the Lunar surface into the 44 fields and giving the names of the maria, mountain ranges, and craters based on the system of Blagg and Muller. (b) the main body of the atlas composed of 4 sheets per field, or 176 sheets to which are added two additional sheets each for the four polar areas making 184 sheets in the body of the atlas (c) Supplementary sheets, 35 in number. 24pp paper covered booklet listing formations, plate details etc. The atlas comes in a lidded box covered in maroon. My name is imprinted on the white interior of the box and on the second page of the booklet. One corner of box has minor separation that can be corrected. This is A SCARCE ITEM. A version was recently sold by Christie?s for $2200.

The second lunar photographic atlas is "The Moon as Viewed by Lunar Orbiter", by Kosofsky and El-Baz, NASA, SP-200, 1970. This is a select compilation of the Lunar Orbiter photographs illustrating the heterogeneous nature of the lunar surface. The condition is quite good.
