Unitron 4 inch + Weight Drive - LAST CHANCE!

This is a vintage Unitron 4 inch f/15 refractor on an equatorial mount. It is nearly equivalent to a Model 160. It offers great performance and a unique weight driven clock drive. This telescope is highly valued by collectors and will draw admiration at any star party. The mechanics and optics on this scope are superlative.

The weight drive works perfectly and gives about half an hour of tracking. The rewind process is simple, easy and quick. Once the drive is "tuned" it tracks perfectly for many minutes at high power. It is a pleasure to use. You can see this actual drive in operation. Just Google "Unitron 160 Tour" and you will find my Youtube video.

Has a draw tube that accepts 1.25" eyepieces or can be reversed to use the .965". The finder is clean and clear. The crosshair is perfect.
The objective has no fungus and coatings are in good shape. Lens surfaces have green coatings. See picture. A few specks of dust are present but the lens does not require cleaning. Under very stringent double pass testing the lens shows a breathtakingly perfect figure over the inner 95mm or so of aperture. As with many hand figured lenses of this vintage it has a very small turned down edge. In use, the turned edge is unnoticeable even at high power. The scope delivers textbook perfect star images inside and outside focus when stopped down to 95mm. This old telescope will stand proudly next to a brand new 4 inch Takahashi. It won't win against the Tak but it will draw approving nods for a great showing.

This scope comes with a wonderfully stable equatorial mount. Moves smoothly in all directions. All locks and slow motions are fully functional and in perfect shape. The setting circles are beautiful. The bubble levels were removed for protection. They are included with the mount and are in pretty good shape.

Flaws:
1. Though the OTA is in great shape there are a few small scratches and chips. The most serious are shown in photos.
2. The mount is in pretty good shape but the mount base has many dings and could use a coat of paint.
3. The scope has solar projection screens sized for a smaller 3 inch scope. They are smaller but work ok with this scope.
4. There is some paint damage to the finder dew shield.
5. Box for OTA is not original to this scope but is original Unitron and works just fine.
6. The Latitude adjuster (a nicely machined brass replica) is for Continental US latitudes (Original was for far North).
7. The Mount box is designed for the far north configuration as well but works ok with the tripod head removed. See pictures.
8. The clock drive is all original Unitron but some of the connection mechanism is not. The arrows indicate the non-original Universal joint and connecting lock. The top support attachment system is a very close model of the original Unitron but is slightly different. It looks and works just fine.
9. The clock drive weights are not all original. Only the one on the top of the stack is original. They work fine.
10. RA slow motion cable is not original but works fine.
11. The Unibalance system is a replica.
