This little spotter may be the pinnicle of it's type in the compact or subcompact class. The Nikon 50mm ED fieldscope weighs a mere pittance, yet It's extreme sharpness, color fidelity and lack of distortion is irreproachable, being the little brother of those highly regarded larger Field Scope series models. For a travel scope on a birding or combo birding/astronomy adventure the"little scope that could" may be ideal and preferable over more bulky 65 or 80mm spotters. The 50 produces an image of such clarity I used it exclusively as my main birding tool for higher power viewing.
More details can be gleaned from online sources. The fact that the 50mm is still in production says a lot about its popularity. Most Internet prices vary in range from $700-to $800.
I have outfitted this one with a couple of items not included in the original package. The first is a wonderful Cley Spy stay on case that for me was very thoughtfully designed and far superior to the OEM one. The CS uses two attached cowl coverings on both ends, quick and easy to remove and replace in the field. I tried Nikon's case once and set it aside. The other is the substitution of a 27x Nikon Fieldscope series eyepiece instead of the retail kit which ships with the Fieldscope zoom. The zoom is OK but I just couldn't warm up to it, sold it and picked up the wide field fixed ocular This provides a highly useful and razor sharp near 30 X power which was ideal for my use. Image fidelity near 40x is about the maximum here with the 'scope.
Condition is excellent + to near mint with only very minor wear to be seen- glass surfaces are unmarred, no sleeks , coating irregularites or the like. Very pristine, though they could use a good cleaning. The reflections you might see are flash artifacts.
There is one minor issue to mention, although it absolutely has no effect or perfomance or image fidelity.
In the first photo, looking closely at the casing at about a 3 or 4'oclock postion you may see a very small, shallow out of roundness. This is exterior only and does not affect collimation or view in any way. A birding guide bumped the tripod, collapsed one of the legs and the front edge scope housing only, way away from the objective position kissed the wooden surface of an observing platform. The scope was fully covered in the Cley Spy case. It is almost impossible to see even with close inspection and is mentioned in the spirit of full disclosure.
I am only selling because this gem of an optic has sat unused in the closetfor awhile now, as I got bit by the photography bug awhile back. Questions or comments let me know. Please include Paypal fee and 30$ shipping.
Includes lens caps, original and Cley Spy case, 27xDS Widefield eyepiece in bolt case. Questions or comments let me know.
