This 1988 Questar showcased and well protected in my office is ready for a new owner. Having enjoyed it immensely along with my many other telescopes it's time to find it a new caretaker.
Optically, this example has the Broadband coatings. Noticeably brighter than without BB coatings. The coatings show no signs of degrading and should last for many years to come. This telescope has never been to the ocean where salty air is a known nemesis to broadband coatings. The meniscus is in excellent condition as well. No spots, scratches or coating loss. The dew shield rides smoothly and effortlessly up and down the telescope shows a beautiful luster on the Star Map and the telescope tube itself being covered by the dew shield all its life presents as pristine glossy new condition - moon map is just beautiful. In fact everything about the Questar is beautiful art. The control box is in excellent condition with all of its features functioning flawlessly; the prism diagonal switch, the Barlow switch, the focus knob and the solar finder filter knob, all smooth and precise. The tube rotates on its axes between the forks with just the right amount of friction making it easy to adjust yet stays where you put it. The declination control movement is just wonderful on these Questars as is the smoothness of the azimuth control knob. On the left fork is the declination lock knob. It too is fully functional and locks altitude where positioned. I've rarely needed to use it. The original Synchronous clock drive motor started making a buzzing sound so after contacting Ursa at Questar a new motor has been installed (receipt provided). It's again functioning flawlessly and has a nice soothing hum - nice sound to hear when you're studying a planet on a quiet night. Questar also provided a brand new power cord. Just plug into the new Orion lithium Dynamo Mini I'm including and you have enough power for a few nights of observing. (These battery packs are an awesome accessory for lots of telescope drives and still available at High Point. I use them on other older classics as well). Also Included is an aftermarket 95mm metal threaded dew shield which adds a little weight to the front when using your heavier eyepieces or a lighter weight binoviewer. In addition to the OEM Visual Back there is a new TeleVue/Questar adapter for using any of your 1.25" accessories. The two included threaded Brandons can also be used in the TeleVue Visual Back. The eyepieces are clear and sharp but do show some wear on their housings. As for Equatorial mounting the telescope, you can either use the OEM table top legs or the included heavy duty QuickSet tripod model 4-72011-6, very similar to the robust Samson model. You can easily adjust the Eyepiece height while observing simply by cranking the altitude handle. Very convenient as a planet moves across the sky. Being in Bortle 8 I'm usually mostly observing solar system objects and just a few of the brighter DSO's and the Questar is an incredible little package of premium optics and functionality. I've studied the planets for many hours with this telescope and it never disappoints. Even 3.5 inches of high quality optics reveals stunning detail in good seeing. During solar activity this is the telescope I always grab first for image quality and of course ease of use and convenience.
