Hi folks. Major changes are coming to the Rio Rancho Astronomical Society's observatory. RRAS wishes to sell the two existing telescopes and replace them. The two scopes: a 16" classical Cassegrain and a 12.5" Newtonian. Both are mounted on German equatorial mounts. These telescopes were fabricated in the 1950's by a local machinist and were donated to RRAS about 11 years ago. The optical elements in both scopes are fine, but the mounts just don't work. After 10 years of unsuccessful efforts of trying to find someone with the expertise to fix them, it has been decided to sell them.
These scopes are built like battleships! Solid steel, brass, extremely heavy components, and 1950's vintage electronics. At the very least, a buyer could salvage the optics and sell the rest for scrap. At best, someone with the expertise could repair the drives and have a couple of observatory-class instruments on hand.
There's no way to ship these scopes! The lucky buyer would have to come on site with a decent sized truck and about a dozen helpers! RRAS members would be on hand to assist. The scopes are located at Rainbow Park Observatory, Rio Rancho, NM.
