So what's the favorite alternate battery sources used by this esteemed
group? I have a 102 SLT that I'm waiting for the clouds to break for and am
accessorizing in the meantime.

I saw a rechargeable 12v 7Ah battery at Bass Pro with the charger for 29
bucks (for underwater cameras!) and I figure the adapter from radio shack
will cost another 10 with a cord.

Any other cost effective ideas?

Does the scope run on 12v? If so then the 7amp battery will run most Go-To tracking systems for 4-5 hours unless it is very cold, then it will run down more quickly.
I use 12 amp batteries to run my Dob and a 17amp Jump Starter for my Refractor. I bought it at Harbor Freight on sale for about $45 and it comes with a charger. You can see it behind the scope at the wall being charged. It will run the scope for a full night and may even be able to power the auto-guider and cooling fan for the DSI II Color camera for an evening.

I have had very good luck with 12V batteries that I bought from www.batterymart.com. I don't think you can beat them in terms of price.

I started out with a 12v 7AH battery, but by the
time you add some heaters to ward off dew, etc.
it only lasts a couple hours. I might suggest to
get one of the 12v 17AH "jump start" packs.
I think you get more bang per dollar with these,
and they are not too heavy.
